Festival of Winter Walks 2016

Clear Paths, Clear Skies, Clear Heads! Join the 2016 Festival of Winter Walks.

As we head into the Advent period, festive over-consumption is looming. Our city offers indulgent Christmas shopping trips, heart-warming family reunions, and heady romantic weekends. Our city can feed all your desires. But what could be more satisfying than wrapping up warm, and heading into the wintry landscape?

Festival of Winter Walks

The Ramblers’ annual Festival of Winter Walks has been held over the Christmas and New Year period since 1988. It started small but has been growing in popularity: there are now hundreds of free events for thousands of walkers across the UK. Although it is a members’ organisation, the RA welcomes everyone to this nationwide event.

There are many local groups who you can contact and there is something for everyone. For instance groups in Greater Manchester include Manchester & Salford, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, and the High Peak District of Derbyshire. Any of them would welcome our guests on their shorter festive strolls, or one of the more strenuous rambles.

Manchester and Salford Walking Group

One of the Ramblers Association groups is the Manchester and Salford Ramblers. They invite everyone who enjoys hiking or walking to join them and take advantage of the excellent walking country. Their website has an excellent programme over the holiday period.

The Manchester Weekend Walkers

This group of Ramblers was set up at the beginning of 2013. As the name suggests they meet primarily at the weekend, although they also arrange the occasional weekend away. Their site says to contact them for more information.

MAD Walkers

It’s not all for the more mature walker! Join the Manchester and District Walkers who are all in their 20s and 30s. They’ve been around since 2004 and have around 300 members. Once again they offer a variety of walks to suit any level of fitness.

Manchester Health Walks

Regardless of health, everyone should be able to take part in the great outdoors. The Manchester Health walks are coordinated by the Manchester Giants Community as part of the Macmillan Active Manchester programme. Their walks are free, open to all and are accessible. They are keen to support people with long term health conditions. The focus is on keeping active and meeting people. Get in touch, or just go along to one of our walks where you are guaranteed a warm welcome.

There are many reasons why a winter walk around Manchester is a fabulous day out. A guilt free festive dinner is just one of them! You can better appreciate the beauty of our landscape when you are walking through it. Meeting new people and immersing yourself in local conversation gives you a different view of the area. Walking makes you feel happier and healthier, so kick start your New Year’s resolutions. And given the festive time of year, get your walk sponsored and send a gift to your favourite charity.
